What is an EIN
An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a federal tax ID number the IRS assigns to a business, similar to a Social Security Number but for a company instead of a person.
How to find your EIN:
1.Check your business formation paperwork (IRS confirmation letter, Articles of Organization, or old tax filings). Your EIN is usually printed at the top.
2.If you can't find it, call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933 (Mon–Fri, 7am–7pm local time) and ask them to look it up. They'll verify your identity first.
How to get an EIN if you don't have one:
1.Go to irs.gov/ein.
2.Apply online. It's free and takes about 10 minutes.
3.Only available Mon–Fri during business hours. You'll receive your EIN immediately upon completion.
What is an SSE
An SSE (Special Event Taxpayer ID) is a number issued by the Utah State Tax Commission specifically for people selling at special events who don't have a business EIN. It lets you register and pay sales tax without giving out your Social Security Number.
How to get an SSE:
1.Email specialevent@utah.gov and request the Special Event Taxpayer ID application.
2.Fill out the one-time application they send you.
3.Submit it back to the Special Events Unit. Call 801-297-6303 with any questions.
4.Once issued, the number is yours permanently. Reuse it at every future Utah event, no reapplying needed.
Why we need it and how soon
Utah requires every vendor at a special event to have a valid tax ID on file with the event promoter before the event happens. We collect this info and submit it to the state so each vendor can get their event tax license in time to legally sell. Without it, the state may flag both you and the event as non-compliant.
Please get your EIN or SSE at least a few weeks before the event. The SSE application especially is not instant, so waiting until the last minute risks not having it ready by show day.
If you don't have one yet, we will send out a reminder to help you get one in time. Failure to get one on time can result in penalties from the Utah government. BulkSwap cannot assist you in obtaining an EIN or SSE, but the steps above will walk you through it.
If you'd rather avoid this process entirely, you can provide your SSN instead. For security purposes, it will be used only to complete the vendor list submission and to submit it to the Utah government, then deleted right away. We do not store or retain it.
